What time does JAŸ-Z in 8 come out?

The streaming clock and the television clock are not the same thing here, and that trips people up every time HBO does this.

HBO's announcement gives the premiere as 8 p.m. ET/PT and says both installments stream "beginning at 8 p.m. ET." Those two sentences only agree if the linear channel runs a separate West Coast feed while the app opens everywhere at once — which is exactly what HBO does. On the Pacific coast that means the app has it three hours before the channel does.

The middle column is ours, converted from the announced Eastern unlock. The right-hand column is the network's own ET/PT phrasing.

How many episodes, and when does each pair arrive?

Eight, in four Friday pairs. HBO published the bookends — a Sept. 18 premiere and an Oct. 9 finale, two new episodes a week — and there is only one way to fit eight episodes between them.

The two middle Fridays are our arithmetic rather than a published list. Worth flagging one wrong number in circulation: a widely syndicated schedule piece put the finale in the week of Oct. 16, which does not survive contact with HBO's own "through the October 9 finale" line.

What is the series actually about?

An interview, stretched to eight parts. JAŸ-Z and Rubin talk through three decades of music — the records, the rooms they were made in, the decisions behind them. Rubin produced "99 Problems," so the two of them are not meeting for the first time.

HBO calls it an eight-part HBO Original and Rubin's directorial documentary debut. There is no reenactment format and no narrator on offer in the trailer: two men, two chairs, a lot of talking.

Do you need cable, or is HBO Max enough?

HBO Max is enough, and it is the earlier of the two on the West Coast. The HBO channel carries the same episodes at the same moment on the East Coast, so the only people with a real decision to make are Pacific viewers who would rather watch at 8 than at 5.
