What Time Does A Different World Come Out on Netflix? Release Time and All 10 Episodes

Hillman College reopens on a Thursday, and it reopens on the same calendar date it opened the first time. Netflix put A Different World on Sept. 24, 2026 — thirty-nine years to the day after NBC aired the original pilot in 1987. Nobody involved is being coy about that.

Here is the practical part: the drop hour, the day-one episode count, who walked back onto the set, and whether you need six seasons of homework first. Short answer to the last one — no.

What time does A Different World come out?

Netflix releases on one global clock, and this is no exception: midnight Pacific, which is 3 a.m. on the East Coast. West of the Rockies, you get it the night before.

So it is a Wednesday-night premiere in two states and a Thursday premiere in the other forty-eight. Arizona sits on the Pacific hour until Nov. 1, when the rest of the country falls back and Arizona does not. Why one clock covers every country at all is in our explainer on the 3 a.m. ET drop.

How many episodes, and do they all arrive at once?

Ten half-hour episodes, all ten on Sept. 24. No weekly rollout, no split season, no part two in November.

That makes it the odd one out this fall, where most premieres around it are metered:

The full map of which shows meter and which dump is in our weekly-versus-binge guide.

Five hours, give or take. One Thursday night and one Friday night, or a single determined Saturday.

Who is back at Hillman?

The spine of it is Maleah Joi Moon as Deborah Wayne, youngest daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, in her freshman year at the school her parents made famous. Both parents are played by the people who played them the first time.

Behind the camera: Felicia Pride is the showrunner, and Debbie Allen is an executive producer who directs three episodes, the premiere among them — the same job she took over after season one of the original. Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Tom Werner also produce.

Do you need to watch the original first?

No. Deborah is a new student and the show is built to be entered cold. But the original is unusually easy to get to, because it is on the same service you are already opening.

That last row is the useful one. The 144-episode back catalogue and the ten new episodes live in the same app on the same subscription — no second service, no rental. Plan tiers and what each costs are in our 2026 price list; the ad-supported tier carries both.

If you want a shortcut rather than 144 episodes, the seasons where Dwayne and Whitley become Dwayne-and-Whitley are the middle ones. Everything the new show assumes you know happens there.

What else is Netflix dropping that week?

Thursday is the crowded day, but the week around it is busy too. Wonka's The Golden Ticket takes Wednesday the 23rd on the same 3 a.m. clock, and Survivor takes two hours of CBS that night. The current week's full service-by-service rundown is on our this-week page, and every per-title page we keep is filed under release times.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I watch the original series? All six seasons are on Netflix in the US, added in February 2025.
